1. History

  • Established in 1693 in Europe by Christians
  • Harshly persecuted for their beliefs
  • Began migrating to the United States in the mid 1700’s in search of religious freedom
  • First settlement was in Berks County, Pennsylvania
  • By 1860, all Amish communities had migrated to the United States

Current Geographic Location and Language

  • Currently, many Amish communities are still most common in midwestern states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Missouri
  • In keeping with their cultural roots, present-day Amish communities speak Pennsylvanian Dutch, a dialect of German as well as English
    • Pennsylvanian Dutch is usually spoken at home, and English is spoken at school
